I have become filled with the desire to now own one. What are the dos and don’ts, the hidden gremlins, the things that I should know that upon sight I should turn around and run away yelling nope at the top of my lungs. Any experiences, even ones relayed from your best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s cousin who may have even just sat in one, is welcomed.

Google “Toyota 7M-GTE head gasket” as your starting point. ;)

A friend of a friend bought one cheap in an attempt to flip and/or keep it. It was a piece of shit that needed a ton of work and had already gone through an engine (see ‘head gasket’)

My friend had one when they were newish...don't remember a whole lot about it except when we had to push the thing it was heavy as hell. Like large sedan heavy. It's a tank.

As others have said, head gaskets were problematic. They left the factory torqued to the wrong spec. If you find one with a rebuilt motor, that should be sufficient. If you find one with a replaced motor, it could very likely have been pulled from a salvage and could still have a looming head gasket issue.
Tavarish actually posted a nice write-up on them.

I had a roommate with one, and it was pretty alright. Others have mentioned the head gasket issue, so be wary of that. Otherwise, they are good GT type cars - too much of a boat to tear it up at the autoX or track, I think. But they handle decent and are pretty fast, especially with some turbo mods.

That one in the lead picture does look great. When I was a wee lad my best friends dad had one in white.

I’ve been itching to get one too recently. I’m a big Toyota guy but cannot afford an Mk IV. I have heard about the head gasket issue too though. I would still want to take a chance on a well kept example though.

Yeah, its seems they like to destroy gaskets left, right and center. I can see why there are a lot of JZ swaps for these cars.

apperently there is a company that makes an aftermarket gasket kit that solves that issue
